As a young university student he met his spiritual master at the yoga-pitha in Sri Mayapura in 1915. Some years later, on Sri Krsna Janmastami in 1923, he accepted both harinama and mantra-diksa from Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Prabhupada and was given the name Pranavananda brahmacari.
Srila Bhakti Pramode Puri Gosvami Maharaja appeared in this world on October 8, 1898 and stayed here for 101 years. He was born in the village of Ganganandapur in Jessore district (in present-day Bangladesh) in a brahmana family. His parents, Tarini Carana Cakravarti and Srimati Rama Rangini Devi, named him Sri Pramode Bhusana Cakravarti. During his childhood, he met his vartma-pradarsaka-guru (the one who opens the door to the path of devotion and gives information about spiritual life), Sri Bhakti Ratna Thakura, a godbrother and siksa disciple of Bhaktivinoda Thakura. Through Bhakti Ratna Thakura he was introduced to Sajjana-Tosani (journals), Bhaktivinoda Thakura’s own Vaishnava periodical, full of his commentaries and holy teachings. It was also through Bhakti Ratna Thakura that he first learned of his future guru, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami Prabhupada.
